The Baden-Württemberg »Functional Nanostructures« Competence Network

Nanotechnology is regarded as one of the key technologies of the 21st century. Smaller and smaller structures are becoming increasingly important in terms of their technological and economic significance. The spectrum of applications ranges from car paint, catalysts and high-performance materials to medical uses, data storage and microelectronics and nanoelectronics, to name just a few examples.

From non-scratch paint to germ-free hospitals

Nanotechnology as an engine of growth for the Baden-Württemberg location. Altering the characteristics of surfaces, making them more resistant to scratches, reducing the presence of germs on them, cleaning them more easily, rendering them dirt-repellent and enabling them to be manufactured at lower cost are all desirable aims which serve to protect the environment and can be achieved through the use of nanotechnology.

Excellence Initiative - Small, smaller, nano

DFG Center for Functional Nanostructures (CFN) in Karlsruhe. Set up in 2001 as the DFG-Forschungszentrum (DSG Research Center) and now augmented to become an excellence cluster, the CFN has concentrated on optical and electronic functions up to now. The use of biological principles for the manufacture of functional nanomaterials was explored to a much lesser extent. Now, the researchers have the life sciences in their sights.

Max Planck Institute for Metal Research
more...

Cooperation with industry has always strongly influenced the basic research of the Institute in terms of providing new ideas relevant to application. Large enterprises as Daimler-Benz, IBM, Bosch, WMF, Wielandwerke and other companies based in the Stuttgart area also conduct substantial materials research. Also, a considerable amount of small and medium-sized enterprises located in this area contribute enormously to modern materials technology.
