German medical-technology companies have been relatively successful in spite of the economic crisis. This is the conclusion drawn in Berlin today by SPECTARIS, the German association for various sectors of industry. Worth a total of 50,000 euros, the main prize in the competition entitled "School Meets Science" goes to the Heidelberg Life Science Lab, a promotion program of the Deutsche Krebsforschungszentrum (German cancer research centre) for scientifically and mathematically gifted schoolchildren. The valuable award for cooperation between research and schools is given to innovative collaborative projects in which scientists and teachers generate and apply new methods of stimulating the enthusiasm of schoolchildren for science and technology.

BMBF starts 25 million euro project entitled "SmartSenior" for intelligent assistance systems

"Intelligent assistance systems for senior citizens can help them to avoid accidents and illnesses and can facilitate everyday household chores", said Thomas Rachel MdB, parliamentary secretary of state in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the Charité in Berlin on Monday. BMBF is promoting development of these systems with an investment of 25 million euros.
