German candidate chosen to join the European team of astronauts 

On the 20th of May 2009, the European Space Agency ESA presented the new European astronauts to the public. Alexander Gerst from Baden-Württemberg was chosen from among 8,413 candidates. Galileo Initiative Baden-Württemberg 

Navigation and positioning with the help of satellites is regarded as the biggest growth market of the coming decades. According to a study of the EU Commission, the world market for products and services in the area of satellite navigation doubled from 10 to 20 billion euros between 2002 and 2003. When Galileo is launched, around 150,000 new jobs can be created in Europe in the area of satellite navigation, and annual revenues amounting to nine billion euros can be achieved.

The DLR site at Lampoldshausen, which employs some 230 staff, was founded in 1959 by space pioneer Professor Eugen Sänger to act as a test site for liquid rocket engines.
