Mukolo from Congo is doing a Master´s programme in Management/International Business
It was the German tax reform of 2008, of all things, that gave Mukolo Mujanga from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa the impulse for his Master thesis in international business. He had already focused on finance as part of his Master’s programme at Aalen University. His main area of interest for his final thesis was the issue of transfer pricing, the internal calculation of services and products within a globally acting company.

New competence center for the global fight against hunger

Research and consulting for development experts at the University of Hohenheim
The University of Hohenheim set up a new competence center in March of this year which will join the worldwide struggle against hunger: the Food Security Center (FSC). “We not only regard ourselves as a training center for development experts, we also communicate knowledge,” according to the Center’s Director, Manfred Zeller. In its terrifying proportions, the 2008 food crisis provided ample evidence of the complex web of causes and effects which now shape our globalised world. The global community has set itself the goal of halving the proportion of people suffering from hunger by the year 2015. The new institute aims to make an effective contribution to achieving this goal. The FSC offers summer schools, exchange programmes and a network of interdisciplinary PhD and PostDoc training in a “Young Excellence School”.

Stuttgart Media University now offers established PhD procedure

Partnership with the University of the West of Scotland
A clearly defined and recognised pathway for graduates and research assistants wishing to go on to study for a doctorate has now been established at the Stuttgart Media University (HdM). The Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), Professor Seamus McDaid, and HdM Principal Professor Dr. Alexander W. Roos recently signed an agreement which envisages the joint supervision of doctoral students. According to HdM, the first candidates will enrol at the UWS for their doctoral degrees, which usually take three years to complete, in the winter semester 2010/2011.

European Centre of Biosciences in Heidelberg
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) has opened a new Advanced Training Centre (ATC) on its campus in Heidelberg. The EMBL intends to establish the new institution as a leading conference venue and training centre for life sciences in Europe. The new centre will equip Heidelberg with "a central European podium at which international scholars from every conceivable discipline will be able to meet to exchange ideas and expertise," stressed Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan at the inauguration in March. The new building, which also houses an auditorium with 450 seats, is built in the form of a double helix to represent a DNA molecule (the carrier of genetic information).

Saran from Mongolia is studying "Environmental Governance" (M.Sc.) in Freiburg
Until the 1990’s, environmental pollution was not an official problem in Saran’s home country Mongolia. “Of course, there were problems here and there, but they weren’t all that serious,” Saran recalls. As the country embarked upon a capitalist economy, new environmental problems arose as some industries and individuals started to exploit the rich natural resources of Mongolia. “To me, a clean and healthy environment is so important that I decided to devote my professional life to it,” says Saran Selenge, who studied politics in Berlin before coming to the University of Freiburg. Her Master’s course ‘Environmental Governance’ deals with social, political and technical issues.
